So how are we feeling about this? Will this new Broadway show be something everyone - from every faith - can laugh about, or will this show amount to nothing more than 21st century religious bullying and mockery?
The upcoming show will consist of a book, music, and lyrics written by South Park co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It will also include Avenue Q composer and co-creator Robert Lopez as a part of the creative process. The creative team behind the production likely has many people - of all different faiths - cringing, due to the nature of previous "religious entertainment" projects that have been done before.
If the same type of show was done with a Christian (mainstream), Jewish, or Muslim theme I can imagine there would be very little uproar, I mean, after all, those have been going on for thousands of years. I think this show will be different because many members of the Mormon faith could feel that they are on the outside of mainstream religious America and could perceive this type of show as very damaging to their religious community.
Previews for this production are set to begin on February 24, 2011, at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, with opening night scheduled for March 24. I guess we will not know how this show will affect LDS Church members - if it does at all - for a little while, but as the dates get closer I can imagine we will be seeing a lot more controversy surrounding the show.
